The island of Crete is taking a leap into the digital future of marine science with Coastal Crete 2.0, a pioneering Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO) that merges cutting-edge technology with environmental protection. Developed by the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) under the EU H2020 ILIAD project, this high-resolution coastal forecasting system places Crete at the heart of Europe’s blue innovation ecosystem.
🌐 What is Coastal Crete 2.0?
Coastal Crete 2.0 is an operational, high-resolution marine forecasting service that provides daily predictions of sea temperature, salinity, currents, and waves around the island. By combining advanced hydrodynamic models with Copernicus Marine Service products, satellite data, and local in-situ observations, it produces accurate, reliable, and user-tailored forecasts for scientists, port authorities, and the maritime industry.
The system implements:
- 🌀 WRF-DA for high-precision atmospheric forecasts
- 🌊 NEMO for ocean circulation and current simulation
- 🌬️ WAVEWATCH III and SWAN for high-resolution wave modeling (up to 50 m resolution near harbors)
Through data assimilation from meteorological stations, the forecasts achieve unprecedented accuracy, supporting both day-to-day marine operations and long-term climate resilience strategies.
